Dooley's Tavern pays tribute to James W. Dooley, the university's unofficial mascot.

As a biology lab skeleton, he made his first appearances on the Oxford campus in 1899 and 1909 by writing letters to the student publication the Emory Phoenix from his perch in a science lab.
