Means Drive honors Alexander Means, a scientist and Methodist minister, who served as the first superintendent of the Georgia Conference Manual Labor School, the predecessor to Emory College.
He then joined the Emory faculty for the college's first year of instruction, in 1838, as professor of natural sciences. Means was president of the college for one year, 1854-1855, and later taught at Atlanta Medical College.
