E. Hebert Rece
Dean of Students
E. Hebert Rece spent a quarter century as Emory's dean of students (and "dean of men," a long-since-retired title).
As dean in 1955, Rece took responsibility for deflating pushball, a popular (and dangerous) campus "sport" in which the freshman and sophomore classes battled to shove a 180-pound inflated ball over each other's goal line. First played in 1923, the pushball tradition had "gotten out of hand," Rece said.
Before and after his administrative career, Rece served as a professor and chair in the Department of Religion.
