Arthur J. Moore
Arthur J. Moore, who never attended seminary, rose to the level of bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church South (later the Methodist Church).
A gifted orator, Moore was dedicated to missionary activities, which took him across the United States and to countries as varied as China, Japan, Korea, Congo, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. In 1940, the native of Waycross was assigned to the Atlanta area; he retained this position even as he accepted the presidency of Wesleyan College, a women's school in Macon.
Moore earned seven honorary degrees, including one from Emory.
