Nelia J. and R. Calvin Kimbrough Nelia J. and R. Calvin Kimbrough came to Candler in 1971. Upon completion of their MDiv degrees, they stayed at Candler -- Nelia as assistant dean for Student Academic Services and Calvin as director of the Media Center.

Patchwork Central -- an effort of Calvin and Nelia along with two other couples -- began in 1977 in an inner-city neighborhood in Evansville, Indiana. The Kimbroughs remained at Patchwork Central for twenty-seven years, directing its community outreach programs and living, working, and worshipping in the neighborhood.

In 2004, Calvin and Nelia left Patchwork Central to work at the Open Door Community in Atlanta. This residential community serves meals, staffs a free medical clinic, conducts worship services and meetings, and provides a prison ministry.
